VAR could have sent Liverpool player off long before Lucas Bergvall challenge during 1-0 Tottenham win

Tottenham will take a 1-0 lead to Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final after defeating Liverpool on Wednesday night.

A fantastic goal from Lucas Bergvall – his first for Spurs – secured victory for Ange Postecoglou in north London, although many in the Liverpoolβ™Œ camp have since argued the Swede should have been sent off before he scored.

The Tottenhamβ™› No.15 was already on a yellow card when he lunged into a challenge on Kostas Tsimikas in the 83rd minute – but managed to avoid being dismissed by Stuart Attwell.

Virgil van Dijk was another to complain about the situation – although the Dutchman himself was fortunate not to have received a straight red card long before Bergvall’s challenge.

Stuart Atwell could have sent Virgil van Dijk off

𓂃In the 61st minute, the Netherlands international raked his studs down the achilles of Dominic Solanke – getting nowhere near the ball.

🎢Atwell clearly missed the incident, and had the challenge taken place in an earlier round, there would not have been the safety net of VAR.

ꦕHowever, with technology in place for the semi-final, those in the VAR booth ought to have advised Atwell to at least go and take a look at the challenge from Van Dijk on the screen, as it ticked many boxes for what should constitute a red card.

Clearly, 🐟Bergvall – who has been compared to Jude BellinghamπŸ’™ – should not be the only one involved in a red card debate.

Ange Postecoglou shares why Lucas Bergvall should not have been sent off during Tottenham 1-0 Liverpool

🐼When asked about the Bergvall drama in his post-match interview, Postecoglou shared the official rule he has been told which meant the Sweden international was right not to receive a second yellow card.

πŸ”œThe Australian said: β€œWe’ve been told consistently that if we play advantage, as long as it’s not a cynical foul, then the player does not get cautioned. So that’s been relayed to us on a weekly basis, because we feel like that’s been happening (to us).”

If that’s what Spurs, who could sign Marcus Rashford♏ on loan, have been told by officials, then it’s only fair to see the rule carried out.
