van Dijk-esque signing? Arsenal have to go for Godin this summer

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed he is on the lookout for players who could provide a Virgil van Dijk-style impact for his side, .

The Gunners have had a good season under the Spaniard so far and remain in contention for a top four finish, but it is clear that their defensive unit is still somewhat fragile.

After 32 games they have conceded 40 goals, making them the second-worst defensive team in the current top six – Manchester United being the worst.

The Gunners have improved at the back since the turn of the year, but there is no denying Arsenal’s attack is far superior to their defence.

Emery wants someone to come in who can make as big an impact as Dutchman van Dijk has for Liverpool – and he might just be in luck.

TBR’s view

One of Europe’s best defenders Diego Godin will be out of contract this summer, and Emery must consider a swoop.

The Uruguayan often flies under the radar, but he is undoubtedly a hugely talented defender and a leader to boot.

He can be the man to come in and provide the impact that Emery is looking for.

Atletico’s defensive record over under Diego Simeone is nothing short of exceptional and Godin has even at the very heart of it since joining the club in.

The fact that he could become available for free makes an approach a no-brainer for Arsenal, who are crying out for someone of his ilk.

He may be 33, but he is still at the top of his game and has shown no signs of dropping off.
