‘Useful’: Craig Levein says Celtic now have a 22-year-old attacker who’s completely different to Kyogo

Celtic’s win in the capital over Hearts sent out a serious message to their rivals that it’s going to take more than a new manager to threaten their foothold in the Scottish Premiership.

Brendan Rodgers has assembled a squad that looks like it is going to be extremely difficult to beat. With players like Kyogo Furuhashi, Matt O’Riley and Luis Palma are running amok in the league and it’s scary to think that Celtic have very good, and different, players in reserve.

And Craig Levein believes that Celtic still have a player in their ranks that if Kyogo isn’t firing on all cylinders could come in and do a job for them.

Levein said [], “He [Hyeongyu Oh] looks a different type of player in that he’s more of a physical striker rather than the kind of darting runs that Kyogo makes or Maeda makes.

“He’s got something different, which is useful, as well. There are games where things aren’t quite working.

“Maybe teams are sitting deep and there’s no space to run in behind and Oh could maybe come into his own on those occasions.”

Now I know the South Korean international splits opinions within the Celtic fans. I even have my own doubts on whether he can make a contribution moving forward.

But in the interests of fairness, you have to take into account that Oh isn’t getting enough minutes on the park.

Sunday’s appearance at Tynecastle took the 22-year-old striker’s minutes on the pitch up to 99 this season. Considering he has made eight appearances that averages out at under 13 minutes per match.

So it’s not really fair to make a proper judgement on his ability just yet. As Levein says, Oh offers Celtic a different option. Brendan Rodgers just needs to utilise it more so that he gets the opportunity to show what he can do.
