Aston Villa defender Matt Targett has heaped praise on the performances of his teammate John McGinn in the Premier League this season.

Villa’s season hasn’t been an easy one. Dean Smith lost his job after losing five games on the bounce, but even then, McGinn impressed everyone.

The Scot has played all but one game in the league this term. He only has three goals and two assists to his name, but his work rate and energy in the middle of the park has been brilliant.

Targett, like everyone else who has watched Villa this season, is blown away by how good McGinn is.

Matt Targett: John McGinn has been unbelievable for Aston Villa

The defender told : “John McGinn has been unbelievable this season.

“He’s playing with real confidence and he’s a massive part of how we play. He makes a lot of things tick in the midfield, you can see how much he’s improving this season but also you see what a massive player he is, even when he goes away on internationals and how much Scotland rely on him.

“It’s great to have someone playing so well and him to make such a big difference for us as a team.”

A look at McGinn’s stats

McGinn’s five direct goal contributions this season is what matters the most, but his underlying numbers show just how good he has been.

In his 16 appearances this season, the Scot has averaged 1.5 key passes, 1.3 shots and 1.4 dribbles. He also boasts of 1.1 crosses and 3.4 long balls per 90 minutes, which is a very healthy return for a central midfielder.

He also averages 2.8 tackles per game and is yet to commit an error that has led to a shot at goal by the opposition. ()

McGinn really has been brilliant this season and under Steven Gerrard, he will only get better.
