‘Unbelievable’: Charlie Adam loved what Rangers star did in 24th minute v Red Star

Glasgow Rangers cult hero Charlie Adam has hailed Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor for the penalty save he made at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers hosted Red Star Belgrade in their Europa League last-16 first leg.

The Ibrox outfit raced into a two-goal lead against their Serbian opponents.

Ryan Kent was brought down in the box seven minutes in and the referee awarded Rangers a penalty after a VAR check.

Gers captain James Tavernier made no mistake from 12 yards, firing his spot kick right into the top corner of the net.

Rangers took the lead on 11 minutes and, just four minutes later, they had doubled their advantage.

A defensive calamity at the back culminated in the ball falling perfectly for Alfredo Morelos to finish wonderfully.

There was no let-up to the early drama, which also included two Red Star goals being chalked off for offside.

Then, 23 minutes in, Rangers conceded a penalty as Ryan Jack hauled Mirko Ivanic down.

Up stepped Aleksandar Katai with a low, hard penalty which looked to be heading just inside the post.

However, McGregor managed to get down and push the spot kick wide in the 24th.

Adam, commentating on BBC Sportsound, said ): “Not bad considering the criticism he had last week!

“That’s a quality penalty but an unbelievable save.

“In the Dortmund second leg, there was a moment where McGregor saved Rangers. He’s done it again tonight.”

Rangers led 2-0 at the break and just a few minutes after the restart, added a third to send Ibrox into raptures.

Leon Balogun rose above three opponents to emphatically head home from Tavernier’s corner kick.

From then on, Rangers just had to manage the game, and saw it out without any difficulty.
