Unai Emery says he did his best to help Mesut Ozil at Arsenal

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has he did his best to get Mesut Ozil contributing to the Gunners’ cause during his time in north London.

Ozil is set to leave The Emirates this month after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta and not even being included in the 25-man squads. A move to Fenerbahce is being touted by various news outlets.

However, Ozil did play under Emery. He made 35 appearances in all competitions under Emery, per . And speaking to , the former Gunners boss admits he doesn’t know what has gone wrong for the German midfielder.

“I worked for one and a half years with Mesut and tried to help him, support him and achieve the performances for the team with him. Now I don’t know what the problems are as I am very concentrated and focused with Villarreal,” Emery .

“I follow every Arsenal match but I don’t know what the problems are with the team or the players. I can only speak about Mesut Ozil when I was with him there and I tried to achieve the best performances with him.”

Ozil’s demise under Arteta has been quite the talking point at The Emirates this season, with Gunners supporters somewhat split over what the club should do with the German.

TBR View: Something clearly amiss with Arteta or his methods

While there might not have been a personal fall out as such, there’s clearly an issue between Ozil and Arteta in some way.

Whether that is to do with how he fits in the system or simply that the Gunners boss doesn’t fancy him, is something nobody knows at the moment.

But, interesting from Emery that he didn’t have an issue.
