Unai Emery now pushing to sign ‘outrageous’ player for Aston Villa

Unai Emery is now heavily focused on bringing a sixth new face to Aston Villa this summer.

The Spaniard sounds like a man with a plan as he prepares Aston Villa for a UEFA Champions League campaign next season, having already swooped to sign Ian Maatsen, Ross Barkley, Lewis Dobbin, Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior.

So, who does Unai Emery want to arrive next at Villa Park? Let’s take a look…

Unai Emery pushing to bring Jaden Philogene to Aston Villa

A story from now states that the 52-year-old is determined to sign Jaden Philogene.

The England U21 international looked set to join Ipswich Town on Tuesday after the Tractor Boys agreed an £18m deal with Hull City and also convinced the winger to sign.

However – as part of the deal to sell Philogene to Hull City in September 2023 – Aston Villa negotiated an option to match any accepted bid, in the form of a matching rights clause.

That agreement allowed Aston Villa 72 hours to decide whether they wanted to hijack the 22-year-old’s move to Portman Road, and the Villans have now activated that option.

The Athletic add that Aston Villa already agreed personal terms with Philogene ahead of time when selling him to Hull City, and Emery is now personally prioritising this deal.

Villans could still miss out

While this deal is currently progressing well for Aston Villa – the Villans even get a 30% discount on that £18m fee as part of the agreement with Hull City – there is a potential problem on the horizon.

The Athletic state that Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town and West Ham are still in contention to sign Philogene – who Liam Rosenior an “outrageous” talent.

It is explained that any of these three clubs could still offer the Tigers more than £18m, which would leave Aston Villa in a position where they need to decide whether to keep matching these bids, or walk away.

For now, an £18m deal is in place to bring the Aston Villa academy graduate back to the Midlands, but an improved offer from elsewhere could scupper this move for Emery.
