UEFA have just handed Arsenal £23m advantage over Tottenham
New financial data shows that Arsenal started their 2024-25 campaign with a £23m advantage over Tottenham before a ball was kicked.
After two games, Arsenal lead Spurs in the Premier League after Ange Postecoglou’s side dropped points in their opening match against Leicester City.
Both North London clubs won last weekend, with Arsenal overcoming an excellent Aston Villa side 2-0 and Spurs putting four past Everton without reply.

Last term, for the second successive season, Arsenal finished above their arch rivals – and that has brought considerable financial benefits.
We do not yet have the financial data for 2023-24, but the Gunners have likely closed the revenue gap between themselves and Spurs.
Arsenal’s turnover at the last count was £467m, while Tottenham‘s was £550m.
Both of those figures were records for their respective clubs, but Arsenal’s revenue was the lowest in the so-called ‘Big Six’ by quite a margin.
However, that imbalance may be redressed in 2024-25.

Arsenal to cash in from UEFA windfall
Arsenal’s return to the Champions League after seven seasons in 2023-24 will have generated somewhere in the region of £65m in extra income.
They reached the quarter-finals of the competition last term but, even if they fail to do so this time around, they will likely earn just as much from their European exploits in 2024-25.
That is due to the expanded Champions League format which will see four extra teams enter the competition as part of a new Swiss system format.
UEFA says that, in addition to extra matchday income and prize money, participating clubs will get a greater cut of commercial revenue from this season onwards.
And a new report in The has relayed that English clubs will earn an extra £23m per season from the revamped competition format.
With Spurs having missed out on the Champions League, that means they are starting at an immediate £23m disadvantage to Arsenal.
In previous seasons when Spurs had qualified ahead of Arsenal, the financial gap had still be large but it was not amplified to the revisions to the competition format.

How will the UEFA cash disparity affect Spurs and Arsenal?
In isolation, one season without Champions League income will not distort the financial balance between Arsenal and Spurs.

However, if either club were to go on a seven-season run without Champions League football as Arsenal did, the effect under the new system would be far more dramatic.
That would be over £160m in additional revenue lost – and that is only the surplus generated by new distribution system, not even the overall pot.
