Two Liverpool players are doing something ‘really unique’, according to Julian Nagelsmann

Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been praised by Julian Nagelsmann following the Reds’ Champions League victory on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges may have been struggling in the Premier League, but they found their scoring touch in the Champions League last 16 as they saw off RB Leipzig 4-0 on aggregate.

Admittedly, Liverpool missed a host of chances in the first half, but Mane and Salah netted in the space of four second-half minutes to make sure of progress to the quarter-finals.

A quick passing move from just inside Liverpool’s own half involving three players teed up Salah to cut inside and slot home with his left foot in the 70th minute.

And four minutes later, Mane converted Divock Origi’s cross from close range to ensure there was to be no late comeback for Leipzig.

“Liverpool were the better team today and deservedly made progress,” Nagelsmann told the Bundesliga club’s after the match.

“We were a bit too cerebral and made mistakes that were too easy.

“We were a bit too sluggish to build up the game and didn’t get the emotionality we needed.

“In moments like this you especially notice the lack of fans who’d push the team forward.

“After the second, the game was over. The two goals conceded also showed the great individual quality on the part of Liverpool.

“What Salah and Mane are doing up there is really unique.

“But my boys are people – we couldn’t achieve the maximum today and that is why Liverpool deservedly made it through.

“We have to accept that, we will let it sink in and we can be sad for a few hours.”

The Champions League continues to provide much-needed solace for Liverpool, whose Premier League title hopes have completely collapsed and top four is now looking like a challenge.

It’s been a really difficult season for the Reds amid injuries and fatigue, but players like Mane and Salah will always have that star quality.

Next season, once key players and back and Klopp can bolster his ranks to ensure there’s sufficient strength in depth, Liverpool will be back, no doubt.
