How Twitter reacted to Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk asking to leave Southampton

In breaking reports, Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk is training alone after asking to leave the club this summer, according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who is quoted by the .

Pellegrino, who is relatively new to the Southampton job, said: “The boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. This is the decision.”

The Liverpool target has been under intense speculation throughout the summer and it finally looks as though he will be leaving the Saints.

The Merseyside club has attempted to sign the Dutchman, but they had to retract their interest and apologise on their after a misunderstanding.

Yet, fresh hope has been given to the Reds, along with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, after Van Dijk’s behaviour has pushed him closer to the exit door.

Competition for the defender is high and so is the pricetag. The Saints, as reported by the Independent, would demand £60 million to £70 million for their prized asset, making him the most expensive defender of all time.

If the mammoth fee was paid, it would see Van Dijk join a top-class side, with all of the potential suitors, except Arsenal, in the Champions League.

Such a big announcement caused a stir on social media, here’s how Twitter reacted:
