How Twitter reacted as Philippe Coutinho’s roller-coaster day unfolded

You could almost hear the massive sigh of relief reverberating around Merseyside this morning when a statement was released on Liverpool’s confirming Philippe Coutinho is not for sale.

had reported just on Wednesday evening that Barcelona had submitted a formal offer in the region of £90million for the Brazilian sensation, touting him as a potential Neymar replacement.

But – just 24 hours before their opening day clash with Watford – it seemed that all fears had been well and truly alleviated with a formal statement from Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group. It insisted:

“The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes.”

Yet it wasn’t long – just 80 minutes in fact – until Liverpool fans were tearing their hair out again as announced that the 25-year-old Brazilian has handed in a transfer request and wishes to leave.

And it’s fair to say that the events of the day caused quite a stir on social media…

It was Liverpool’s Twitter account that broke the initial good news…

And it’s fair to say their supporters were just a bit relieved…
