Troy Deeney touts Rangers manager Steven Gerrard for Tottenham job
this week that he believes Steven Gerrard might be the right man for the job at Tottenham Hotspur following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, as the Rangers boss continues to shine north of the border.
Gerrard, 40, has guided Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years this season – stopping Celtic’s 10-in-a-row pursuit. He has also made Rangers a force in European competition, reaching the last 16 of the Europa League consecutively.
Tottenham, meanwhile, sacked Jose Mourinho last Monday just days before the Carabao Cup final. Interim manager Ryan Mason has since beaten Southampton, but has suffered defeat in the final to Manchester City. A replacement is needed.
Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag and Maurizio Sarri are leading the race to replace Mourinho, but Deeney – who was linked with a move to Spurs during Mourinho’s spell in charge – thinks that Gerrard might be the man to take the North London club forward.
“McCoist is going to hate me for this,” Deeney said. “But they want a style of play and a winner. Then there is a certain somebody, up in Rangers, who is doing that and developing players. Maybe that could be the chance Steven Gerrard deserves.”
TBR’s view – Could Gerrard move to Tottenham?
Firstly, Gerrard has already stated that he dreams of managing Liverpool. Gerrard has done incredibly well at Rangers, installing standards, a winning mentality and an identity. He is a manager with enormous potential.
But the Premier League is a different story. Does he go straight to Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp leaves? Or does he get experience in the Premier League before a move to Liverpool? If so, could that mean he might be tempted by Spurs?
If the ultimate goal is Liverpool, going to a Spurs would be a threat to Liverpool. Gerrard needs to join a lesser side in the Premier League – or go straight to Liverpool. Perhaps Palace could tempt the £48k-a-week () manager?
