Troy Deeney thinks Newcastle have a ‘monster’ player who doesn’t get enough credit
It’s fair to say that Newcastle United’s opening weekend win against Southampton may have not played out quite as Eddie Howe expected.
Fabian Schar’s red card completely changed the game, even if Newcastle weren’t quite at their free-flowing best even before he left the pitch in the 28th minute.
Schar’s red divided opinion at the time, but all Newcastle fans will be unanimous in recognising how much Howe’s side will miss the Swiss international for the next three games.
That being said, Newcastle delivered a superb defensive performance after Schar was dismissed, able to hold onto their 1-0 lead courtesy of Alexander Isak’s quick-thinking and Joelinton’s determination to score.
Howe sacrificed Jacob Murphy to bring Emil Krafth on as his right centre-back immediately after the red, another reason why Newcastle need to sign Marc Guehi as soon as possible.
That being said, when delivering his Premier League for BBC Sport, it was a different defender entirely who Troy Deeney included from Newcastle.
Troy Deeney says Dan Burn has been a bargain for Newcastle since signing from Brighton
Deeney hailed left-footed centre-back Dan Burn as a ‘monster’ for his efforts in Newcastle’s resilient 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
The pundit said that the has been something of a bargain since he joined from Brighton & Hove Albion back in 2022.

The boyhood Newcastle fan has been incredibly reliable for Howe during his tenure in the north-east, and Deeney was almost running out of compliments for the towering defender.
Deeney said: “Playing centre-half – and then in a back three when Newcastle went down to 10 men after Fabian Schar’s red card – he was a monster.
“I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves considering just how good he’s been for how little they paid Brighton for him.”
Of course, Newcastle will now rely on Burn more than ever during Schar’s absence.
Burn is likely to be partnered with Krafth against Bournemouth on Sunday, unless a deal can be agreed to sign Guehi beforehand.
