Troy Deeney tells West Ham to launch bargain move for striker Graham Potter called ‘unbelievable’

West Ham United are likely to be in pursuit of a new striker at the end of the season as Graham Potter looks to strengthen his attacking ranks.

The Hammers are somewhat short of firepower and, with Danny Ings and potentially Michail Antonio set to be out of contract this summer, reinforcements are needed.

West Ham signed Niclas Fullkrug in the summer, but given his injury issues this season, Potter may well look to bring in some cover for the German just in case.

Troy Deeney has now suggested to West Ham that they should move for a striker set to be out of contract this summer who Potter recently deemed “unbelievable”.

Troy Deeney says Jamie Vardy would be a ‘wonderful acquisition’ for West Ham

The striker in question is Jamie Vardy, who has been a star for Leicester City over the past decade but may well see his time at the King Power Stadium come to an end this summer.

Vardy’s contract expires at the end of the season and, with Leicester likely to go back down to the Championship, it remains to be seen what his future holds for him.

Deeney, speaking on talkSPORT, said he feels Vardy would be a good fit for West Ham or Everton.

“It’s a punt when you’re just looking at his age and depending on what his wage structure is,” admitted Deeney.

“But Jamie is in a wonderful position because there’s not many number nines in world football, never mind in the Premier League.

“I could see him doing well at Everton or West Ham.

“Jamie is one of those players and people where you hate him when you’re playing against him but if he’s on your team then you’d love him because he does all the horrible things.

“Let’s just use West Ham as a case study. They’ve got Fullkrug, they’re probably going to try and get another striker and so having Jamie Vardy as the third option or the second option is fantastic.

“You know that as the season goes on there’s going to be rotation and there’s going to be injuries so I think he’ll be a great option for a lot of teams.

“He’s won the Premier League, played in Europe, played for England – that’s a wonderful acquisition to add to your squad.

“For me, Jamie hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down and while he’s still got that pace I think he’s an excellent buy for anybody.”

What Graham Potter said when asked to compare Jamie Vardy and Jarrod Bowen

Back in February, West Ham’s Premier League clash with Leicester saw the coming together of two forwards shining in the Premier League after plying their trade in non-league.

When asked to compare Vardy with Jarrod Bowen, Potter told the : “I don’t think it’s fair to either of the players to compare them – Jamie Vardy is unique.

“He’s the best Jamie Vardy there is. Absolutely fantastic in terms of what he has achieved.

“His goalscoring record, winning the Premier League, winning the FA Cup, an unbelievable story from non-league to winning the Premier League.

“But Jarrod is Jarrod and he’s the best at being him. He’s our captain. A wonderful player. Probably not the same goalscorer as Jamie.

“I have full respect for Jamie but at the same time I’m loving working with Jarrod. He’s been great for us, brilliant.

“The fact is they’ve come on a similar journey, through non-league and experienced the real world and they share that.

“You can see that in Jarrod – there’s a humility about him, a respect about him and about how he plays the game and how he conducts himself.

“I think both in different ways have been great ambassadors for the different paths you can have as a footballer.”
