Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘Golden Boy’ prospects are testament to Liverpool’s youth development
Last week, Italian newspaper Tuttosport for the Golden Boy award, featuring Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Tuttosport annually present the Golden Boy award to a player under the age of 21 in European football, as voted for by journalists.
This year, Kylian Mbappe of France was highly tipped as one of the favourites for the award, as he enjoyed an explosive season with Paris Saint Germain, and won the 2018 World Cup with France.
Had he won, Mbappe would have been the first ever two-time winner of the award, which he first claimed in 2017.
This year, however, it will not be Mbappe. The final five have been named as follows:
Patrick Cutrone (AC Milan)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Justin Kluivert (Roma)
Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax)
Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid)
Alexander-Arnold’s inclusion comes after he became a regular in the Liverpool side that made the 2017-18 Champions League final, after which he travelled to the 2018 World Cup in Russia with England.
Should he win, he will become the second Liverpool player in the last four years to pick up the award, following in the footsteps of Raheem Sterling in 2014.
Alexander-Arnold’s inclusion – especially ahead of the mercurial talent that is Mbappe – is a testament to Liverpool’s ability to develop youth, and Jurgen Klopp’s value of his home grown stars.
