‘Tread with caution’… BBC pundit tells 28-year-old player not to join West Ham in January

Michael Brown has given his verdict on whether or not Kalvin Phillips should join West Ham United from Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The BBC Sport pundit has outlined the reasons why Phillips should stay put at City, who won the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup last season.

So, what has Michael Brown said about Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look.

Kalvin Phillips told not to join West Ham United

Well, Michael Brown has said that Kalvin Phillips should not join West Ham United. The former Manchester City player thinks that the 28-year-old should stay at the Etihad Stadium for the second half of the season.

The BBC Sport pundit has noted that Phillips could face stiff competition for a place in the West Ham midfield.

has reported that West Ham want to sign the England international midfielder on a loan deal in the January transfer window. has claimed that the Hammers have already booked a medical for later this week.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with Phillips, who has been on the radar of Newcastle United as well.

Brown said about Phillips to West Ham rumour on: “I think, what I would do, is I would probably look at it from Kalvin Phillips and say, there are some great players around, there is still a little bit of uncertainty, bit of sort of negativity around the manager.

“If I am Kalvin Phillips, I am looking and saying, ‘Well, yes, I want to make the summer in Gareth Southgate’s squad, yes, I want to play as much as I possibly can, but I would also be thinking, can it go wrong for me? Is there a competition in midfield? Is there a club that I can go and sign for four years that definitely want me and I want to move forward.

“I think that would be the only thing that I would say is does Kalvin Phillips need to go on a loan in this period of time when his stock is high? Yes, he is not playing, yes, he has got a summer tournament, but I would say, I would tread with caution on that one.”

My View: Kalvin Phillips should move to West Ham United

In my opinion, Kalvin Phillips should really consider a move to West Ham United in the January transfer window. Things will surely not be as bad as they are for him at Manchester City at the moment.

Phillips has failed to do anything of note at City on a personal level since his move from Leeds United in the summer of 2022.

The 28-year-old has made four substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made one start in the UEFA Champions League for the Citizens so far this season.

The England international midfielder made two starts in the Premier League and played 39 minutes in the UEFA Champions League for City last season.

Surely, Phillips would stand a better chance of playing for West Ham than he would at City during the second half of the season.
