Trabzonspor tell Tottenham Hotspur to wait until after Euro 2020 to seal £17.2m transfer of goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir
According to , Tottenham Hotspur are one of the leading sides in the race to sign Ugurcan Cakir but Trabzonspor will not sell the goalkeeper until after Euro 2020.
Spurs are seen to be the most likely Premier League destination for the Turkey international, but Daniel Levy continues to face European competition from Inter Milan and LOSC Lille.
All three are positioned strongly to obtain Cakir’s services in the summer transfer window, when Trabzonspor are expected to demand at least €20million (£17.2m) plus a 25 per cent sell-on clause.
The Senol Gunes Stadium outfit would reject any offer that falls below those requirements, and will not sign off on any deal until after the European Championships have concluded – potentially in the hopes of increasing their asking price.
Cakir is already considered to be the most valuable player in the Super Lig after keeping appearances this season, as the captain to Abdullah Avci’s side. He is also the undisputed Turkey number one.
Tottenham being viewed as the most likely Premier League destination for the 25-year-old would suggest the north London side have edged ahead of Liverpool () and Aston Villa () in the Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Roma for the goalkeeper.
TBR’s view:
A good summer at Euro 2020 for Cakir could be considered as a good and negative thing for Tottenham now that they are viewed as one of the more likely sides to sign the goalkeeper, as a strong tournament may see Levy forced to pay out even more than the current £17m.
But a bad tournament may see other suitors back out of the race, fearing he cannot cope with the big-game pressure, which could also count for Spurs as they seemingly search for Hugo Lloris’ long-term successor.
Cakir will enter the tournament confident in his own talents, mind, after sharing award, and did well when faced with Netherlands’ talented attacking line-up in a World Cup qualifier in March as Tukey beat Frank de Boer’s side.
