It seemed as if Tottenham were instead keen to test the 19-year-old at Championship level, with Plymouth presenting a great opportunity.

Plymouth currently have four high potential youngsters on loan from big clubs, with Lino Sousa and Darko Gyabi joining Ashley Phillips and Devine from Aston Villa and Leeds United respectively.

Therefore, you can see why Spurs considered the move an advisable one.

That being said, Devine has now made four appearances for Plymouth since his Tottenham recall.

And perhaps the best of those came in last night’s 2-2 draw against Coventry City.

After a disappointing start, Devine impressed with his all round contribution and assist.

But despite the praise his individual performance received, Devine wasn’t happy with the result overall.

Tottenham’s Alfie Devine laments late goal conceded by Plymouth

Speaking after the game, Devine said: “It’s a very tough one to take I think. We’ve played so well for 95 minutes and then in the last second of the game that sort of thing happens and I think we’ve only really got ourselves to blame on the set-piece side.

“I think it’s something that we do need to improve on because it’s cost us three points in the end.”

Of course, Tottenham fans will probably be pleased to here Devine speaking with such responsibility, a player who is clearly benefiting from first-team football at both Port Vale and Plymouth.

And if the youngster is going to have a senior career with Spurs, these kinds of experiences will be invaluable.

All that being said, it seems as if Tottenham may already be readying a bid for a midfielder this summer
