Tottenham’s top transfer priority is Ben Davies upgrade

Tottenham’s first transfer priority is apparently a left-sided central defender to replace Ben Davies in the starting XI.

The report that Antonio Conte is happy with Eric Dier and Cristian Romero as two thirds of his back three.

But Davies is apparently a man they feel they can upgrade as a matter of urgency ahead of Conte’s first summer in charge.

That is despite the fact that Davies has been something of a man transformed since Conte came in and played him in the role he has occupied for much of his international career.

Former Spurs defender Michael Dawson : “Since he has been there under Antonio Conte, he has been incredible.

“He has come from nowhere. He didn’t play under Nuno, he didn’t play under Jose, he has brought him in as a left centre-half.”

Given that transformation, it is perhaps a surprise but it is clear that Tottenham do need to improve their defence if they are to get to where Conte wants to take them.

And there is no point Spurs having Conte if they aren’t going to back him in the transfer market with the players he wants.

Stefan de Vrij has been linked and is reportedly valued at just £17 million ahead of the summer transfer window, so could be the man? Time will tell.
