Tottenham’s pursuit of Ginter hints at planning for life without Alderweireld
Tottenham are keeping tabs on Borussia Monchengladbach central defender Matthias Ginter over a potential summer move,
They that the north London club have had their eye on the German international since he left Borussia Dortmund – who Tottenham face in the Champions League last 16 later this month – in 2017 and are ready to go back in for him again this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino will face competition from across north London as Arsenal also want the German to help reshape the shaky defence Unai Emery inherited from Arsene Wenger.
that Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has a £25m release clause in his contract this summer and perhaps Ginter could step into the breach if he leaves.

With Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and young Juan Foyth already at centre-back, Tottenham are well-stocked in that position and with more pressing concerns elsewhere in the team, signing another one wouldn’t make a great deal of sense unless a departure is impending.
And with Alderweireld’s contract situation so precarious and well-publicised, it makes sense for Pochettino to begin planning for life without him – to attempt to ease the blow if the Belgian does leave.
Ginter has the right age profile – at 25 – and experience, with 23 international caps, to be what Spurs are looking for if Alderweireld leaves the club, provided they can see off Arsenal to his signature.
