Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier is showing potential to eclipse Kyle Walker at club
Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has always been a player to mould his game around his attacking contribution, but even he will have been surprised to hear that he boasts the title of being the most creative player in a single game so far at the World Cup.
Having made as few as eight caps for England, Trippier is already looking undroppable for Gareth Southgate’s side at right wing-back. A steady defensive display against Tunisia was bolstered with a rare blend of attacking ingenuity, as the 27-year-old created six of England’s 14 chances at the Volgograd Arena.
His corner would eventually prove decisive in added time, as Harry Kane stole a late winner. And it just epitomised Trippier’s approach to the full-back role.
And after a season of similarly impressive performances at club level, the question bears asking: has Trippier eclipsed Kyle Walker’s impact at Tottenham?
The stats certainly suggest as much, as Walker falls short of Trippier’s assist tally in both his final season at Spurs (6), and his first with Manchester City (7), as the former Burnley man racked-up an impressive nine assists in all competitions last campaign.
But, its not just the stats that suggest this could be the case. To the naked eye, Trippier’s impact and delivery in the final third is unmatched, not just by Walker, but by almost every fullback in the Premier League. And he looks to have established himself as first choice for club and country for the foreseeable future.
