Goals from David Neres, Hakim Ziyech, Dusan Tadic and Lasse Schone meant that Real crashed out of the competition for the first time in three years.

There were brilliant performances all over the pitch from Ajax – with Tadic arguably the standout player – but de Jong showed why Barcelona are paying so much money to sign him this summer.

The youngster will leave for the Nou Camp at the end of the season, with the Catalan giants paying £65.3 million for his services ().

the Lilywhites had actually made contact with Ajax officials over the player.

Apparently, Spurs spoke with the player’s agent Ali Dursun about a potential switch to north London.

The Express claimed that the move would be bankrolled by the sale of Christian Eriksen this summer.

Spurs ultimately missed out, and it’s already looking like a gem has perhaps slipped through their grasp.

Against Real, de Jong recorded a pass completion rate of 90.7% () and calmly controlled the game from deep in midfield.

There were moments where he made 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric look like a mere mortal, and Spurs’ loss appears to be Barcelona’s massive gain.
