Tottenham were ‘very close’ to signing Champions League winger with 10 goal involvements this season – journalist

Tottenham Hotspur were very close to signing winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the summer before he moved to Napoli.

He switched from Dinamo Batumi to the Serie A side and has so far as they have impressed this term.

They have thrashed Liverpool and Ajax in the Champions League this season already, winning 6-1 in Amsterdam in midweek.

Tottenham were close to getting Kvaratskhelia

He wrote: “Erling Haaland isn’t the only must-watch element in European football right now. There’s also an electric Napoli team, and especially Khvicha Kvaratshkelia.

“Their form is all the more impressive given it had been anticipated this would be a transitional season for the club, after the loss of so many senior players in the summer. It is instead possible that the turnover, and the introduction of young players like Kvaratshkelia, might have actually perfectly suited Luciano Spalletti’s livewire approach.

“It’s of course hard to know whether it is sustainable, and this may represent a real chance for a first title since Diego Maradona and 1990, but that’s almost beside the point right now.

“They are there to be enjoyed. They are must-watch. It’s also not like no one was watching Kvaratshkelia, either. Tottenham Hotspur were very close to him in the summer.”

Tottenham are struggling somewhat for creativity right now, despite having four top quality forwards in their ranks under Antonio Conte.

Perhaps it is the gameplan and maybe it is just the balance and chemistry being off at present, but Conte will want more from his frontline.

Kvaratskhelia would have added unpredictability and it would have been great to see him come up against Premier League defences.

Maybe one day, but for now he is making Napoli fans dream and perhaps leaving Spurs supporters wonder what might have been.
