Should Spurs make a move, they would face competition from both Arsenal and Newcastle United who are also considering the 26-year-old.

Gary Neville has previously been very complimentary of Neves in the past, saying he could play for any side in Europe.

Speaking via , Neville said: “I genuinely believe that Ruben Neves could go and sit in any midfield in Europe in any team in any league and be comfortable.”

And judging by these , that must now be an opinion shared by Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham’s midfield has been a real strength our their side this season, however there’s little depth beyond the starting trio.

James Maddison’s injury has now caused massive disruption – a player with no natural replacement.

And should Pape Matar Sarr or Yves Bissouma be missing for a spell, Ange would again have to turn to an option that doesn’t necessarily suit his new style.

Tottenham are now interested in signing Ruben Neves in January

Of course, Neves isn’t the first midfielder that Tottenham have been linked with since Postecoglou has arrived.

Celtic’s Matt O’Riley has also been strongly linked with a reunion with his former boss.

It’ll certainly be encouraging for Spurs to see their side linked with such talented midfield operators.

However, it remains to be seen just how the club prioritises their spending in January given all of the glaring gaps in their squad.

Spurs could arguably strengthen thei depth in every area of their spine, but that is a task too big for one window.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham do in fact see it necessary to sign a player of Neves’ profile in January.

There’s a lot on the agenda for Postecoglou and Daniel Levy, a to-do-list doubled by a chaotic night against Chelsea.
