Spurs: Manchester United edge ahead in race for youngster; 2 strikers in talks
Spurs look to be edging closer to their first signing of the season, with Dutch striker Vincent Janssen appearing to be closing in on a move, with the amongst others in reporting Janssen’s presence in London ahead of a potential move. Janssen’s record of 27 goals in 34 goals puts him with one of the more clinical forwards available, and at 21, the Dutchman looks to be a signing with large potential. Janssen looks to be a similar player to Harry Kane in terms of playstyle – a physical striker, who stands at 6ft tall, and with an eye for goal.
The only concern over the move is that he plays currently in the Eredivisie, and the league’s best player last year, Memphis Depay, has barely made an impact at Manchester United this season. Still, the Eredivisie has created some fine talent that has shone in the Premier League in recent years, including Luis Suarez, Christian Eriksen and the current centre-back pairing at Spurs, in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
The report that Spurs are, however, to miss out on another highly rated youngster in Breel Embolo. The striker, valued at £20m, is widely considered one of Europe’s emerging stars, and has been playing first team football in Basel since the age of 17, as well as representing Switzerland ten times already aged just 19. Embolo’s pace, strength and clinical finishing appear to make him a perfect fit for the Premier League, and could realistically be deployed either as the lone striker in Spurs’ 4-2-3-1 system, or as any of the attacking midfielders behind Kane.
A striker is clearly a necessity for Spurs in this transfer window, especially given their Champions League commitments next season, and Embolo would definitely fit Pochettino’s system. However, Spurs face a big task to convince the youngster to sign, not just because of pressure from the perceived ‘bigger’ club in Manchester United, but – if the Spanish website is to be believed – Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
