Tottenham target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was once flattered by Jose Mourinho interest

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic at a potentially reduced cost of £50 million. Jose Mourinho is a massive fan of the Serbian midfielder. The Lazio star’s agent is former Mourinho player Mateja Kezman and it is even claimed the Portuguese boss saw Milinkovic-Savic as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba whilst manager at Manchester United.

Indeed, Mourinho was even spotted checking the midfield maestro in action during his time at Old Trafford.

The Tottenham boss watched Milinkovic-Savic in action for his action against Montenegro in a UEFA Nations’ League match back in 2018.

Speaking to the press after the game,, the playmaker was happy to hear that Mourinho was keeping an eye on his progress.

“I am a Lazio player but it is obvious that I was pleased that a coach of his stature came to watch the match.

“I read a little bit everywhere he was here at the stadium to see me play, but that does not mean anything. Maybe he was not here for me, but for someone else.”

It goes to show that Mourinho’s name does still carry a lot of weight and players will be tempted to join Spurs to work with the player.

Is his allure as strong as it was in 2018, probably not, but Tottenham fans will certainly be hoping so as Milinkovic-Savic would not only be a Christian Eriksen replacement, many would consider him an upgrade.
