Tottenham Hotspur star Ryan Sessegnon has revealed that he has worked really hard during the pre-season break to put on muscle and become much stronger than he was last season.

The young Englishman joined Spurs from Fulham for £25 million when he was still a teenager (). His first season in North London was a difficult one, but after a loan spell in Germany with Hoffenheim, he came back much stronger.

Sessegnon only played 144 minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo last season, but his fortunes completely changed following Antonio Conte’s arrival.

The 22-year-old played 19 times under Conte and really impressed at times. He is hoping for more game time this campaign, and to achieve that, he has worked extremely hard to bulk up and become stronger than he has ever been.

Speaking to , the versatile Englishman said: “I used the off-season as an opportunity to get muscle into my legs – and my top as well. If you can see the difference then obviously it’s worked.

“To make myself stronger and play more games, to have the capability to go up and down for the full 90 minutes. That’s one of my aims, to play most games available this season. I had a solid two weeks out in Portugal just before pre-season started, working with a trainer.

“Double sessions every day, upper body, lower body and just running a lot. Free weights and squats, hamstring work, obviously, because of my history. Making myself stronger in every aspect. It will help for sure, 100 per cent, because last season I was getting these injuries because places around my hamstring wasn’t very strong.

“I’ve managed to work in the off-season doing all this stuff on my hips and my glutes to make it stronger in every area. I’ve moved the extra [muscle weight] around. I feel a bit strong. The running we’re doing at the moment, any weight we put on we’re losing straight away.”

Sessegnon was really impressive in the second half of last season. His performances kept Sergio Reguilon out of the side, and he can be really proud of what he achieved last term.

As good as he was, there’s still a lot of room for improvement in his game. Conte publicly claimed at the end of last season that Sessegnon has to improve his passing, and the Italian is spot on.

His fitness and physicality also needed to get better, and Spurs fans should be absolutely delighted that the youngster has worked extremely hard to get himself into good shape.

Sessegnon will have to fight with Ivan Perisic for a place in the side next season. It will be interesting to see how he’ll get on.
