Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen sends heartfelt message to Marouane Fellaini

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has sent a touching message to Marouane Fellaini on Instagram after the latter chose to retire from international duty.

The 31-year-old played 87 times for Belgium, with many of those coming alongside Vertonghen. He scored 18 goals, but since moving to the Chinese Super League, he has decided to call it a day.

Fellaini left Manchester United after six years at the club to join Shandong Luneng in January for £10million (). He turned out 177 times for both United and indeed the same amount of games for Everton.

Following Fellaini’s decision to call quits on representing Roberto Martinez’s side, Vertonghen took to Twitter and put rivalries between Spurs and United aside to congratulate Fellaini on his Belgium career.

Considering the style of player Fellaini is, he has had a sparkling career that has included six years at one of the World’s biggest clubs.

A throwback to the old era, Fellaini is physical and prefers the ball in the air. It is a style not as common these days,  with the ball kept on the deck preferred by the majority.

An enormous amount of caps for Belgium highlights just how effective – and perhaps underrated – was Fellaini. Now, he is picking up a huge pay cheque in China and will continue to do so until at least December 2021.
