Tottenham should target Wout Weghorst as striker hints at loan move
Reports last summer claimed that Tottenham Hotspur wanted Wout Weghorst after a campaign in which he scored 21 times in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg.
Weghorst would get the chance to move to the Premier League. But it was Burnley who secured his signature, signing the Dutchman for in the wake of Chris Wood’s departure.
Ultimately, the move did not work out. Weghorst only scored two goals as the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League.
He missed a golden chance on the final day of the campaign that would have put Burnley back above Leeds in the battle to stay up. Certainly, you would imagine that a goal at that stage would have made the Whites’ life much more difficult before they did score their winner.
Weghorst has provided an insight into what his future holds. . He left the door open for a loan exit, hinting that he would be prepared to return to Burnley if they are promoted.
“We have clearly agreed in advance that I will not play in the Championship. The club would like to keep me and will do everything they can to return to the Premier League as soon as possible,” .
Tottenham meanwhile, are on the lookout for a new striker. Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici once again face the difficult task of finding someone to provide competition for Harry Kane while also being content with being an understudy.
Spurs being back in the Champions League will help. But it is still going to be tricky.
Tottenham should consider Weghorst after comments about his future
Perhaps Weghorst could be the answer if Burnley are open to a loan deal. Of course, his stock has dropped since moving to Turf Moor. But he averaged a league goal every other game at Wolfsburg.
And with the players Tottenham have, you would imagine that Weghorst would have a lot more opportunities to work from in North London.
It may be an underwhelming move for many. But taking Weghorst on loan could see Spurs sign a ‘‘ striker as cover for Kane. And it would leave the club with plenty in the kitty to address some of the other priorities.
Much may depend on which players Tottenham have in mind. But Weghorst’s comments should certainly catch Tottenham’s eye given the club’s past interest.
