Tottenham should move to Samuel Umtiti as Barcelona prepare another fire-sale – TBR View

Tottenham, it seems, are still in the hunt for a few new players, namely at centre-back, despite Jose Mourinho enjoying a stellar summer window.

Spurs signed Joe Rodon at the last minute during the window, while there was also heavy talk of the likes of Milan Skriniar and Antonio Rudiger making the move to north London.

But Mourinho ended up with just Rodon in defensive terms. The Welshman is expected to develop in the ranks before realistically challenging the likes of Alderweireld and Dier for a starting berth.

However, there’s no denying that question marks remain over Dier, while Davinson Sanchez has also failed to kick on like many believed he would. A centre-back, then, may still be a priority in January and Barcelona may have opened a door for Spurs.

claims that Samuel Umtiti is among a number of players being considered for sale. Capped 31 times by France, the powerful defender has struggled a bit at Barca.

But the club is struggling in general – by their expectations – so maybe Umtiti is a victim of that decline? A move to the Premier League with Spurs could be just what he needs.

Well-known

Umtiti, 26, is not a name that is new to Tottenham fans. Back at the start of the summer, claimed Barcelona had offered the Frenchman to Spurs in exchange for Tanguy Ndombele.

Despite that deal not going through, the defender will be on the radar of Spurs scouts and Mourinho. And with Barca now looking to sell quickly it seems, a cut-price deal might make sense.

It’s easy to discount a player sometimes just because of a poor year. Umtiti has had a bad 12 months or so, but he’s still a quality operator and has experience at the highest of levels.

At 26, he has time to develop into his prime. Strong, quick, and dominant on his day, Umtiti would offer Tottenham an almost ready-made defensive option for now and the future.

Come January, this could certainly be a transfer Tottenham consider looking into that bit more.
