Tottenham set to miss out on financial windfall from Johnny Cardoso deal thanks to this decision

Daniel Levy is widely regarded as a shrewd negotiator and a top businessman, having transformed Tottenham into a highly successful operation off the pitch.

Under his tenure, Tottenham may not have been very successful on the pitch with just one trophy in 17 years, which Ange Postecoglou delivered this season by winning the Europa League.

However, the way Levy runs the club from a purely commercial and financial standpoint is often widely praised.

And while Levy has built a reputation as a shrewd and tough negotiator, often getting the best out of transfer deals, he doesn’t always get it right.

And the deal involving Johnny Cardoso and Giovani Lo Celso last summer may well be one of those rare bad deals.

Tottenham to miss out on profit from Johnny Cardoso deal

Levy agreed a unique arrangement with Real Betis regarding Cardoso as part of the Lo Celso deal last summer, which included a pre-agreed fee and a preferred option to sign the American midfielder if they wished to do so.

As part of the deal, should Spurs choose not to pursue Cardoso, they would be entitled to 20% of any future sell-on fee received by Betis from a subsequent transfer.

However, according to the latest from , Spurs are set to miss out on a financial windfall from Cardoso’s sale.

This is because Spurs and the player never came to an agreement in the first place. Tottenham also have not contacted Real Betis or Cardoso to inform them that they want to trigger the clause.

It has also been reported that Cardoso will snub any move to the North London club in favour of Atletico Madrid, who are closing in on a deal to sign him.

Tottenham’s need to bolster their midfield

Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield options this summer as they prepare for the new season.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s future at Spurs remains uncertain with reports linking him with a move away.

Yves Bissouma could also be sold after an inconsistent season from the 28-year-old. It has been reported that Spurs are actively working to offload Bissouma.

A move for Cardoso looks off but interest remains in other midfielders. Former Man United academy star Angel Gomes is linked with Spurs, with TBR Football reporting that the club is confident they can secure his signing.

Another name firmly on Tottenham’s radar is Eberechi Eze. The club have long admired the Crystal Palace star and have maintained interest across multiple transfer windows.

With Champions League football secured for next season, Spurs will be expected to bolster their squad.

However, much of the club’s direction could depend on whether Ange Postecoglou remains in charge or is replaced.
