Tottenham should rival Arsenal for Gelson Martins this summer

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is undoubtedly looking to bolster his attacking options this term, and a number of stellar names have been linked with moves to north London. But so far nothing has gathered any real traction on that front.

Reports from the last month claimed Pochettino made Manchester United’s Anthony Martial a priority target, but weeks later nothing is any closer to materialising and for the 22-year-old are now circulating around Old Trafford.

Then came Spurs’ alleged pursuit of Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, with Pochettino quickly deciding to cool interest, after the Eagles revealed their £70 million valuation of the 25-year-old,

Fans were excited by links to Borussia Dortmund’s attacking prodigy Christian Pulisic, feeling Tottenham could be the next big step in his career.

But the player’s father quickly refuted claims that any negotiations were taking place between the two, , heaping further disappointment on Spurs’ pursuit of another quality attacker.

Tottenham simply cannot afford to see deals keep falling through, and should act on an opening that arose yesterday.

Gelson Martins allegedly terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon, , which could mean the 23-year-old is available for a cut-price, or potentially a free transfer, and are reportedly interested in sorting a deal.

Tottenham would be foolish to let the Portuguese international go to their north London rivals on the cheap, and they could pip the Gunners to his signature with the lure of Champions League football.

There are certainly no concerns over the player’s pedigree, as he has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising youngsters in recent years – notably bagging 15 goals and 15 assists in little over 50 appearances with Sporting.
