Tottenham reportedly want striker who produced magic moment that Klinsmann labelled ‘incredible’ in 20-21

Tottenham Hotspur are one of four Premier League clubs keen on signing Schalke talent Matthew Hoppe. The American striker caught the eye with six goals in the Bundesliga last season, including a hat-trick against Hoffenheim. His three goals were labelled ‘incredible’ by Jurgen Klinsmann.

Schalke were eventually relegated into the second tier of German football, but Hoppe emerged as one of their shining lights of a dismal 20-21 season. Indeed, the USA striker came into the side in November – and in January netted the hat-trick. It was Schalke’s first win of the season.

His six goals in a side that finished rock bottom has caught the eye of Premier League clubs. Tottenham, Newcastle, Wolves and Southampton are all keen on Hoppe – claiming he can go for just £4million. Klinsmann knows him well, and spoke of his excellent hat-trick

“He’s a Southern Californian kid that came through at Strikers FC, and then the Barca academy in Arizona,” . “Seeing him score three goals in one of the most-difficult moments in Schalke’s history, is just incredible. It is a fairytale story. They were 31 games without winning. It should make him super proud.”

Why Hoppe might just be ideal for Tottenham – amid Klinsmann comments

Tottenham look more than likely to keep Harry Kane. No club wants to pay his £150million price tag and if clubs want to offer players in return, then Spurs are going to struggle to convince them without Champions League or Europa League football. But they do need back-up.

They certainly at least need cover given they have qualified for Europe – albeit the Europa Conference League. Spurs are likely to use it to bring through younger players and Hoppe could be the ideal kind of player in that format. Spurs should really consider a move this summer.
