Tottenham reportedly want striker that impressed van der Vaart last season

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned their attention to Wolfsburg target man Wout Weghorst as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a striker this summer – and Rafael van der Vaart is clearly a fan, praising his work rate earlier this season.

Weghorst, 28, has been in stunning form over the past couple of seasons for Wolfsburg – clocking up 38 goals and creating 12 more in 79 league and cup appearances for the Bundesliga side. But just two years into a five-year deal, he could depart.

that after missing out on Callum Wilson, Ollie Watkins, Patson Daka, Willian Jose, Arkadiusz Milik, Alex Sorloth and Danny Ings – Spurs have chosen to go after 6ft 5in target man Weghorst. He is rated at £27million.

Now a Netherlands international following his stunning Wolfsburg form, Weghorst came on for his country against Estonia back in November 2019 and his hard-working cameo role impressed Spurs icon van der Vaart.

“So proud of that boy. We saw him sing the national anthem with all his heart. That boy did 28 sprints in half an hour. That was infectious. He put pressure on his own and then something started to happen,”

TBR’s view – Weghorst is the perfect Mourinho striker

Looking at Mourinho’s past clubs, it is clear that he prefers to use a powerful striker capable of holding the ball up. Diego Costa and Didier Drogba in his two spells at Chelsea, Karim Benzema at Real Madrid and Inter Milan at Diego Milito.

Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United and now Kane at Spurs are also examples of just that. Bringing a player like Weghorst fits the criteria of striker that Mourinho likes – not least because he is also experienced. At £27million, he is a good addition.
