Tottenham reportedly closing in on manager that Mkhitaryan has compared to Chelsea boss Tuchel
Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the appointment of Portuguese gaffer Paulo Fonseca – in a move that would see Fonseca swap roles with Jose Mourinho. An announcement will reportedly be made next week, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s Thomas Tuchel comparison to Fonseca will surely excite Tottenham fans.
Fonseca, 48, resigned after two years in the Roma job – having failed to build on what was a decent fifth-placed finish in his first season. Injuries prevented him from building on his first campaign. Now, reports he will sign a three-year deal, with an announcement expected next week.
The reputation surrounding Fonseca is that he is an attacking manager. His Shakhtar side scored 295 goals in 139 games during the three years he was in Ukraine, winning three titles. Speaking in April about Fonseca, ex-Arsenal man Mkhitaryan claims he is much like Chelsea manager Tuchel.
“He is similar to Tuchel, he is trying to put the players in the right position, giving them the freedom to enjoy their style of play. I’ve had the best coaches in my career and I’ve learned a lot not only about the game of football, but also about life,” Mkhitaryan said,
If Fonseca can be anything like Tuchel at Tottenham, then Levy is making the right appointment
Fonseca clearly likes to hand his players the freedom to attack. But in order to do that, you need really good defenders and Tottenham do not have that. Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld are not the standard of centre-back required. The attackers do not have the licence to attack.
That is why Jose Mourinho played so defensively. That is why Ryan Mason saw his side lose to Leeds and Villa in his last few games in charge. Sign a few top-class defenders, and Fonseca can take this Tottenham side back into the top four. Getting funds from Daniel Levy is the question.
