Tottenham reportedly approach gaffer that Serie A president claimed is better than Mourinho

Tottenham have reportedly approached Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini over replacing Jose Mourinho as he continues to shine as the Serie A club’s gaffer – a manager that Genoa’s president once claimed is better than Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Gasperini, 63, is currently one of Italy’s best managers having won the Serie A Manager of the Year title with Atalanta over the course of the past two seasons. The experienced gaffer has masterminded another brilliant season, with Atalanta in second.

His attacking style of play at Atalanta has seen his side score 79 goals in 34 games this season – which is still some way off the 98 they scored last season, in just four more games. He really has got Atalanta playing some incredible football in recent years.

claim contract has been made between Spurs and Gasperini in the ‘past few hours’ and Spurs fans will be excited by Genoa president Enrico Preziosi’s verdict from 2011 – claiming Gasperini is a better manager the Mourinho and Pep.

“I am certain he’ll have a long era at Inter,” Preziosi said 10 years ago, after he left Genoa to move to the Nerrazzuri – “He won’t leave to be replaced by someone like Pep Guardiola or Mourinho, because he is better.”

TBR’s view – Gasperini could be the answer at Spurs

Hilariously, after Preziosi’s comments, Gasperini was sacked after just five games as Inter manager following a dismal run of four losses and a draw – including a 3-1 defeat to minnows Novara and Turkish side Trabzonspor in the Champions League.

However, he is a different manager now and has reignited his managerial career. The best manager in Italy for the past two seasons, he is a contender for the award once again this season. But it is his attacking style that should attract Spurs.

Ryan Mason is getting the best out of Gareth Bale because he is giving his attackers freedom. Mourinho struggled because he is a defensive manager. It is not hard to see that Spurs need an attacking manager, and there are few more so than Gasperini.
