Tottenham: Palace reject £15m bid; Deal agreed for goalkeeper; clubs after £22m man
Despite not playing any football on Thursday, Spurs faced a potentially season-defining day, with the Champions League draw possessing the potential to have a great impact on their season.
Thankfully for Spurs fans, the club avoided big hitters such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the two Madrid clubs, instead drawing CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco in an evenly matched but very agreeable group. Now with a good chance of progression past Christmas in the Champions League, Spurs should have the gravitas to attract some big name players before deadline day.
However, this has not been Mauricio Pochettino’s policy thus far at White Hart Lane, and if the latest transfer rumours are anything to go by, he is not changing his ways any time soon.
The latest player to be targeted by Tottenham Hotspur is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who has reportedly been the subject of a failed £15 million bid, according to the .
After selling the equally exciting Yannick Bolasie for £10 million more than the offer Spurs made for Zaha, plus with the knowledge that they had previously sold the twice-capped England winger for the very amount offered by Spurs to Manchester United three years earlier, it was no surprise that Palace rejected the move.
However, Spurs are unlikely to stop in their pursuit of Zaha, who is believed to have had his head turned by the prospect of Champions League football, and is slightly miffed with the gap in wages at Palace between Yohan Cabaye and new signing Christian Benteke with his own salary.
Palace are thought to be preparing new contract offers for some of their stars to readdress this balance, but if Spurs continue their interest Zaha may start to push for a move in order to play in the promised land of Champions League football.
As for Spurs, Zaha; although still far from the perfect winger, would provide them with a significant amount of pace that is currently lacking from their attacking midfield. The same was said about an £11 million move for Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, and the move for Zaha could indicate that that transfer is in jeopardy, but it has been reported that the moves are independent from each other.
Still, Zaha to Spurs is a surprising but interesting transfer. Were it to happen, expect the 23-year-old winger to be used mainly from the bench, helping Spurs to see out the game with his lightning pace on the counter attack. He still as plenty of potential to fulfill, and as long as the price is right, a move to Tottenham could be a good one.
Whilst a move for Zaha still has some distance to go, a deal for Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez looks to be moving much closer, with Spurs reported to have agreed an initial £500,000 loan deal, with a £6 million buy option next summer.
Lopez; who has played under Mauricio Pochettino before, is one of the most talented goalkeepers in Spain, and at just 21, has the potential to be a long term replacement for Hugo Lloris, as well as filling in for the Frenchman whilst he recovers from a hamstring injury.
With Espanyol unwilling to sell this summer, it appears that a loan-to-buy move is the best way for Spurs, who have had several bids for Lopez rejected in the last few days, to get the deal over the line. He will be a welcome addition to the squad in a place where they now look pretty light.
Finally, Spurs may face a struggle to keep hold of attacking midfielder Son Heung Min, after Wolfsburg that they have interest in the player.
Spurs are hoping to recoup the £22 million they spent on Son last summer, but Wolfsburg are hoping for a figure closer to £17 million. Still, losing Son, despite his limited impact at White Hart Lane, could be a bitter blow for Tottenham.
A versatile but clinical forward, Son has slotted in expertly across all of Tottenham’s front four positions, and provides energetic and useful cover in attack. Losing him, and losing money on him, would be a big mistake for Spurs with a Champions League campaign coming up.
They were handed a boost on the Son front, though, after Schalke admitted they weren’t interested in signing the player. However, the Gelsenkirchen club did complete the signing of Spurs’ Nabil Bentaleb on a loan move with a view to buy next summer.
