Tottenham now believe 23-year-old’s interested in joining after making contact

Journalist Dean Jones has shared what Tottenham Hotspur believe is the stance of Jean-Clair Todibo on a move in January as they target the centre-back in the transfer window.

Spurs have had a nightmare with their centre-backs in recent weeks. They have been without Micky van de Ven since the defeat to Chelsea in November. Meanwhile, Cristian Romero is now also on the sidelines.

Full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies have tended to play together when van de Ven and Romero have been out. So it is hardly surprising that Tottenham appear to be prioritising a move for another defender when the window opens next week.

Tottenham believe Jean-Clair Todibo wants to join

“Tottenham sense there might be an opportunity here, because what I understand, the initial contact around this was with people on Todibo’s side of things rather than with Nice. And they believe that Todibo is interested in this transfer,” he said.

“I just struggle to believe that it will be pushed through fast enough that Tottenham are happy, because Tottenham want a centre-half to arrive by mid-January ideally. They really don’t want this being dragged out across the whole month. They want to know very quickly whether they can get Todibo.”

A timely boost for Spurs

Tottenham’s desperation to sign another defender is probably not going to help them. Obviously, selling clubs know just how important it is that Spurs make a signing at the heart of their backline as soon as possible.

Tottenham will hope that that does not lead to prices rising significantly. They showed by not signing an out and out striker after selling Harry Kane in the summer that they are prepared to hold off on making signings unless the right player is available at the right price.

Spurs also hope to have van de Ven back in mid-January (via ). And Romero may be back towards the end of the window. So if they are lucky over the remainder of the season, they may be able to cope with the options they have.

However, there is surely no question that signing Todibo would hand Tottenham a big boost.
