Tottenham: N’Koudou latest; youngster could leave; West Ham player scouted
Tottenham’s summer transfer window appears to be gathering pace as they edge closer to the signing of Marseilles winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou for a fee of around. The 21-year-old scored six goals for the French club last season, after arriving for just €1 million from Nantes in the summer of 2015.
Spurs are in need of more attacking talent to support their squad through the upcoming Champions League campaign, and N’Koudou may fit the bill perfectly for the North London club. Only Nacer Chadli and Son Heung-Min are out and out wide players in the current squad, and Mauricio Pochettino will need more options for the increased number of games and times when he needs more pace and energy on the wings.
Still a raw talent with a lot to work on, notably strength and close control, N’Koudou will provide Spurs with a pacy, direct option going forward, as well as an energetic and tireless force closing down opposition defenders in order to regain the ball high up the field.
He is bound to initially arrive as a squad player, but he could be a fine option from the bench and has the potential to develop into a good player in the future.
The transfer of N’Koudou may not be as simple as the mere £10.8 million fee suggests however, as Spurs could be loaning Cameroon youngster Clinton N’Jie to Marseilles as a in the deal.
Arriving for £9 million last summer, N’Jie’s game time was extremely limited, before he was ruled out from December until the end of the season with a knee injury which required surgery. Still considered a talented prospect, it is clear that since the signing of Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar, Pochettino doesn’t feel that he has a place for N’Jie in his squad for the upcoming season.
It is a good move by Spurs, N’Jie needs to recover from his injury, but with a title to push for and the Champions League, he will not get that at White Hart Lane. If he has a strong season at Marseilles it might be worth bringing him back into the team, but it is likely that he will leave for good after a disappointing spell in North London.
Finally, Spurs have been sending scouts to the Under-19 European Championships in Germany to watch West Ham United starlet Reece Oxford. Oxford, who played 12 times for West Ham last season, has been an important part of the England side that has won every group game at the under-19 Euros, and would cost in the region of £15 million.
However, with West Ham keen to hang onto the player, and Manchester United and City interested in the deal, this could be a difficult one for Spurs to complete. For one, the fee for a player who has only played 12 games at professional level is a very steep one, and is a lot of money to lose should Oxford fail to progress. Secondly, they have significant competition for the player, and may struggle to outbid the financial powerhouses of Manchester United or City should it come to it. This deal is a long way off.
