Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama has taken the biggest step backwards

Tottenham travel to Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League and overall it’s been another positive season under Mauricio Pochettino.

They currently occupy a top four position in the league, are moving into a new stadium, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

But the Spurs player to perhaps take the biggest step backwards during the 2018/19 campaign so far is Victor Wanyama.

The central midfielder has seen his season disrupted by injury problems, but when available he’s hardly been in the main plans of manager Pochettino.

Wanyama has been back for selection since February and four out of the last six league games he’s been an unused substitute.

The 27-year-old was a no-nonsense enforcer when he first arrived from Southampton back in 2016, but fans haven’t seen him anywhere near his best for a long time now.

With Mousa Dembele’s exit in January, it opened the door for someone to seize a key central midfield role at the North London club.

Moussa Sissoko is the surprise candidate that has shone brightest this season, while Wanyama has gone sliding down the pecking order and seems out of favour.

Wanyama has made just 11 senior appearances all campaign and it’s hard to see him forcing his way back into the XI on a consistent basis,

He is currently on a £65,000-a-week deal () with Spurs and is at his best when he is breaking up play and being a brick wall in front of the defence.

But he really needs a run of consistent starts to get back in the groove and right now he’s miles away from where he once was.
