Tottenham may be able to engineer part swap between Alderweireld and Zaniolo
Tottenham and Roma are eyeing a potential part swap between Toby Alderweireld and Nicolo Zaniolo,
They that the Italian side want the Belgian defender, who has a £25 million release clause at Tottenham as he enters the final season of his current contract.
Meanwhile, Spurs are keen on 20-year-old Zaniolo, who is rated at around £40 million – so a deal to move both players and save money in the process could be in the offing.
That could involve Tottenham paying just £15 million for Zaniolo, but getting nothing for Alderweireld – but it could get both sides a player they really want.
Daniel Levy is a shrewd businessman and this kind of deal has his hallmarks written all over it. If he can get an ageing player like Alderweireld off the books while getting in some younger blood and saving millions in the process, he will likely be overjoyed.
Tottenham have signed Tanguy Ndombele but need to continue to upgrade their midfield options, where the likes of Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama remain too limited and slow.
Alderweireld’s £80,000-a-week () wages should not prove too much of a problem for Roma, and the slower pace of Serie A means his advancing years would be less of a problem.
