Tottenham must look to Swansea’s Alfie Mawson to replace Toby Alderweireld

For many Tottenham fans, and seemingly Mauricio Pochettino, the loss of Toby Alderweireld is an unavoidable fact. Looking for someone to step in and fill his shoes is a tough task, but the odds on one man stand out in particular: Alfie Mawson.

Tottenham are clear favourites to seal a deal for the England international with , who offer odds as low as 2/1. Arsenal are the next best option at 8/1, whilst he is 4/6 to leave Swansea this summer.

With odds also offered as low as 4/7 that Alderweireld will depart, it’s pretty clear that if Mawson does arrive for the first season at New White Hart Lane, it will be to replace the Belgian.

The defender has impressed despite forming part of one of the sides struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League in Swansea City, earning an England call-up in the process and even being in the frame for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad to travel to Russia for the World Cup.

Having come from the bottom, initially with Brentford, first making his name on loan at League Two team Wycombe Wanderers, he is exactly the kind of project that will appeal to Pochettino.

Now firmly established as a Premier League player, he has averaged an impressive 6.2 clearances per Premier League game this season, one of the highest in the division.

The chance to continue his development alongside another experienced professional in Jan Vertonghen would only help to bring his game on and develop further.

The only doubt for the Lilywhites will be how Pochettino balances the potential signing of Mawson alongside Davinson Sanchez at the back off the back of yet another season without silverware where critics have accused the team of lacking experience and character for the big occasions.
