Tottenham could improve striking options with January signing of Mario Mandzukic

Tottenham Hotspur made hard work of beating Southampton on Saturday, eventually running out 2-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane ensured Spurs prevailed, although they played for over an hour with 10-men after Serge Aurier’s red card.

Mauricio Pochettino will have been delighted to end a difficult week with a victory to move on from Tuesday embarrassing defeat to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup.

After that defeat, the Tottenham boss mentioned fixing some problems during the January transfer window.

Several conundrums will need solving during the next window and a striker will probably be high on the list of priorities.

One man who should be firmly on Tottenham’s radar is Juventus outcast Mario Mandzukic. , he is available for £9 million and the player himself hopes to earn £94,000-a-week.

Given his goal record at some of European football’s top clubs that should make him great value for many clubs – Spurs included.

Tottenham decided to let Fernando Llorente leave during the summer and they didn’t manage to replace him before the window slammed shut.

Mandzukic, 33, would be the ideal replacement, despite an element of short-termism.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham will actually enter the race to sign Mandzukic but they could certainly do a lot worse.

In 162 games for Juventus, he has netted 44 goals and registered 24 assists. He has been a proven goalscorer wherever he has played his football and also has 33 goals from 89 Croatia appearances.

Tottenham are desperate to start winning trophies and Mandzukic knows all about laying claim to silverware.

At £94,000-a-week he would fit well into the wage budget currently in place at Tottenham and he would provide some proven backup for the in-form Harry Kane.
