‘He will be delighted’: BBC pundit makes Conte claim ahead of Tottenham match tonight

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte “will be delighted” with how Spurs are grinding out results, according to BBC Sport pundit Glenn Murray.

The north Londoners remain unbeaten in all competitions, with five wins out of seven in the Premier League and Champions League.

Admittedly, Tottenham have had to grind out a few results over the past six weeks, but they’re yet to lose a match.

Murray believes Spurs are “underperforming” at present, particularly with the impressive firepower at their disposal.

However, he understands that there is a “real art” to not hitting top gear, yet still securing the points.

“I expect better performances,” Murray said on ahead of the Champions League trip to Sporting CP.

“Out of their last five games, they have drawn two and won three. But they have won two of them by the odd goal.

“However, with the firepower they have got, it just doesn’t feel they have quite hit the heights.

“Going back to not playing well and winning. That’s a real art.

“And they will hit their groove at some point, then they could be really dangerous.

“I personally think they are underperforming for the level of their players and what Conte expects.

“But, as a manager, he will be delighted, at the moment.

“The season has just started. They are grinding through and getting enough points to get close in the Premier League.

“They are doing well in Europe. Now is not the time to hit the groove, the time to do that is in March and April.

“But I just want to see better performances from a brilliant group of players Conte has put together.”

There aren’t many teams in football history that can demolish their way to a title for the whole season.

Often there will be displays of champagne football, but there will also be games that have to be ground out.

Spurs are showing that they’re capable of doing this – picking up points despite somewhat lacklustre performances.

The quality is certainly there, and as the season goes on, Tottenham will no doubt go through the gears.
