Tottenham hand contract to forward Mourinho believes has ‘incredible talent’

Dane Scarlett has been handed a professional contract by Tottenham.

The 17-year-old is already a club record-holder, having become Tottenham’s youngest ever player in a competitive senior game when he replaced Lucas Moura in November’s 4-0 Europa League win over Ludogorets.

He made his Premier League debut late on in February’s 2-0 win against West Brom, and made another substitute appearance in the 4-0 Europa League victory over Wolfsberger later that month.

He played a role in Tottenham’s fourth goal that night, dispossessing Gustav Henriksson and setting up Carlos Vinicius for his second, and speaking to after the match Jose Mourinho extolled the youngster’s virtues.

He said: “Dane has incredible talent. I don’t want to speak too much because tomorrow I arrive in the building and the kid’s boss is going to kill me.

“I don’t want that so I don’t want to speak too well about him. I just want to say that he will be 17 next month and I want him to be part of the first-team squad next season.

“So this season he is there and here, goes to training sessions with us and matches with the kids of his age and trains there.

“Next season he has to be a first-team player. Immense talent. Very good physical development.

“He’s very good, he’s going to be very good. I hope that nothing is going to destroy that potential.

“He must have feet on the ground and head on his shoulders because he has a fantastic talent.”

Tottenham confirmed on Sunday that the player has signed his first professional contract with the club.

It was triggered following his 17th birthday on March 24, and will last until 2023.

Scarlett has made one appearance for England’s under-16 team, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win against Denmark in August 2019.
