Tottenham fans think the board are making a mistake with their latest decision on Cristian Romero
Tottenham Hotspur have just made a key decision on Cristian Romero’s future but the club’s supporters aren’t so sure they’re doing the right thing.
Romero has missed several months through injury having played just once since October 30 after he reinjured himself in their defeat to Chelsea.
Micky van de Ven has also been in the same boat and both players being sidelined at the same time has been a major blow for Ange Postecoglou’s defence.
But now, with the Argentine’s contract set to expire in 2027 and Real Madrid circling, Tottenham have made a big decision over the future and the fans are questioning it.

Tottenham fans unsure Cristian Romero is deserving of being their best-paid player
On Tuesday, TBR Football reported that Tottenham are ready to offer Cristian Romero a new contract and make him their highest earner.
The Lilywhites are aware of Real Madrid’s interest in Romero and are hoping to fend off the European champions by handing him a bumper new deal.
Madrid want a new central defender and have made the 26-year-old and Arsenal’s William Saliba their two top targets for the summer.
However, Spurs fans are unsure whether Romero has done enough to justify being made their best-paid player given his shocking injury record and have taken to X to share their views.
One fan said: “He has not earned it to be honest, I’d rather sell and buy another top-class defender who wants to play for us and not just his country.”
“Why would you make someone who’s missed a whole campaign’s worth of games in three and a half seasons your highest-paid player?” added another supporter.
There were yet more question marks over the club’s decision: “Is this worth it? He has missed half a season for the past three seasons with injuries. Phenomenal player, deserving of being our highest earner and can lead us for the next five years for sure, but with all these injuries, I’m not sure.”
“I love Cuti so much but why would they try if he is determined to leave? Not to mention that he spent half of last season and this season injured! This club is being ridiculous, to be honest,” claimed another fan.
How many games has Cristian Romero missed for Tottenham through injury?
Romero has already missed 25 matches for Tottenham this season and a total of 97 days which does leave question marks over his availability.
Postecoglou has admitted Romero is a ‘slow healer’ and has failed to offer a definitive timescale on his return much to the frustration of the supporters.
His first campaign at the club was also troubled by injury as he missed 28 games with five different injuries.
Season | Days | Injuries | Games missed |
24/25 | 97 | 3 | 25 |
23/24 | 20 | 1 | 3 |
22/23 | 39 | 2 | 9 |
21/22 | 129 | 5 | 28 |
There is no doubt over Romero’s exceptional talent, although fans are right to question offering a player such a lucrative deal when they are having issues keeping fit.
