Tottenham fans fear Ange Postecoglou is making a mistake after his recent decision on Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham Hotspur supporters fear the North London club are about to make a key mistake by renewing the contract of Rodrigo Bentancur.

Tottenham are in talks with Bentancur over a new deal with his current contract due to run until the summer of 2027.

The 27-year-old has become an important player under Ange Postecoglou since returning from a head injury having started Spurs’ last seven matches.

But many Spurs fans feel there is a reason why Postecoglou shouldn’t be making the former Juventus player a key part of his squad moving forward.

Tottenham fans unhappy Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract is being renewed

Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to X to share their frustration towards the North London club renewing Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract.

The £21m midfielder has played a lot of football recently, however, his performances have proven to be pretty inconsistent.

The Uruguayan international has suffered some bad injuries during his spell in North London and he seems to still be struggling to get back to his best.

But Spurs supporters believe the club need better options in the number six role and are keen for the midfielder to be upgraded.

One fan said: “Better than Bissouma? Sure. Good enough? No. I can appreciate that Bentancur has struggled with injuries and trying to get back to his pre-ACL self, but it’s just not going to happen. We should be looking to move these players on, not give them a longer deal. Strange decision.”

“The argument will be ‘Well it’s him or Bissouma who stays’. An ambitious club ships both off. Buy a defensively solid number six who can pick out a pass and also have Gray as an alternative.

“I’d also trigger the Johnny Cardoso clause as an extra option. Bentancur in my eyes is not a number six and will never be a successful number six for Tottenham,” added another.

There was yet more criticism for Bentancur: “Bentancur is clearly a very good footballer but in the recent poor run, I can’t remember how many times he was the most senior player on that pitch and got hooked because he disappeared. We were all asking for more from our senior players and he was the most disappointing.”

“Should ideally be sold. Not a six and we have better options at eight. But I guess it’s not Football Manager. Upgrade Bissouma and have Bentancur in rotation,” concluded another supporter.

Tottenham need to trigger option to sign Johnny Cardoso

Tottenham have the option to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in the summer for around £20.7m which they agreed as part of a deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso.
