Tottenham fans delighted as Steven Bergwijn scores, and gets assist for Netherlands
Steven Bergwijn scored and got an assist for The Netherlands on Tuesday night – and Tottenham fans are utterly delighted for their stuttering star.
Going into Tuesday night’s game, 24-year-old Bergwijn had scored just one goal for club and country in 2021 – netting in a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Clocking up 60 appearances for Tottenham, Bergwijn is yet to prove his hefty £25million () transfer fee – netting just four goals for Spurs.
But after another tricky start to the season, the Netherlands international produced a brilliant – and much-needed – display for his country.
With The Netherlands needing a win to avoid slipping below Turkey on Tuesday, they faced Norway. Louis van Gaal watched from his wheelchair.
It proved to be a frustrating night for Bergwijn and co, until the Tottenham star slammed home an effort into the roof of the net on 84 minutes.
Then, he set up Barcelona star Memphis Depay to score the winner in injury time. It was only Bergwin’s second goal for his country, in his 16th cap.
What are Tottenham fans saying about Bergwijn and his goal?
Bergwijn is beginning to lose the patience of Spurs fans. Only 13 goal involvements in 60 outings is clearly not enough, to cost £25million.
But there have been glimpses – and many feel he was stifled under Jose Mourinho. With Antonio Conte in charge, he might get a new lease of life.
Many Tottenham fans responded to the news that Bergwijn has both scored, and created another goal – and the majority were delighted for him.
