Tottenham: Eriksen contract latest; West Brom to sign £13m man; 25-year-old midfielder to leave
It has been one of the most unwanted stories of the summer for Tottenham fans, but it appears that Christian Eriksen’s contract dispute may finally be at an end, with the Dane to sign a brand new five-year deal this week.
24-year-old Eriksen had shocked his club earlier in the transfer window by demanding an increase of his wage from £32,000 to £150,000 per week. Naturally, Tottenham were unwilling to pay this much to one player, as this is far above the bracket of their highest earners, but it looks as if Eriksen was merely using the high wages as a bargaining chip, and will accept an offer of £80,000 per week to remain at White Hart Lane.
Eriksen has endured a slightly difficult opening to the season, churning out three bang average performances against Everton, Crystal Palace and Liverpool as Tottenham have eased their way into the new season. The Dane has come under a lot of criticism from the club’s fans for his performances, but most will hope that his bad form was merely as a consequence of transfer talk and he will now be able to focus on playing his best football.
His delivery from set pieces and ability to play accurate and deadly passes are crucial to the way Spurs play, and with a lack of pace in their side, they need Eriksen to be firing if they are to challenge domestically and in Europe this season. Having the contract dispute resolved will hopefully see Eriksen back to his best.
It looks as if Eriksen; an important part of the team, is staying at White Hart Lane this term, but Spurs may be about to get rid of some unwanted talent in the same position as West Bromwich Albion on a deal for winger Nacer Chadli.
Chadli was a big part of Mauricio Pochettino’s 2014/15 side, but lost his place to a resurgent Erik Lamela and the emerging Dele Alli last season. It has been made clear throughout the summer that Spurs would sell the Belgian for the right price, and it appears that a £13 million bid from the Midlands club is the said amount.
The deal; which will be a club record for West Bromwich Albion, looks to be a good move for the player, who will certainly get game time at the Hawthorns. Manager Tony Pulis has come in for a lot of criticism this season for his side’s functional displays, and the introduction of Chadli should add a bit of attacking bite to his team, assuming Pulis grants him the license to perform in the manner he wants.
For Spurs, losing Chadli means losing depth and a bit of pace from their line-up. Although not really good enough to be playing Champions League every week, the Belgian represented a good back-up option. He may be missed if Spurs get any injury problems in attack this season, but how much depends on whether they can sign Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and keep Son Heung-Min.
Finally, Spurs look set for another departure with Ryan Mason to a £10 million move to Hull City.
Much like Chadli, Mason fell out of favour last season, and looks short of the quality needed to make an impact in the Champions League. The signing of Victor Wanyama has pushed him further down the pecking order, and an exit is sensible in order for him to advance his Premier League career as a starter.
Hull City’s problems have been belied by a strong start to the season, but they still lack first team quality, and signing Mason would certainly help them. They need as many players as possible before the window closes, and Mason would be a very good addition.
