Tottenham: Defender set for new deal; bizarre reports over Lloris contract; club hits back at controversial release clause claims
It’s all contract taꦏlk at White Ha💮rt Lane on Tuesday morning, and with the good news coming up first, it seems that Spurs fans can rest easy over the future of another of their defensive stars, Toby Alderweireld.
A report in the claims that the Belgian is close to agreeing fresh terms with the🌞 North London club, and will follow in the footsteps of Harry Kane and compatriot Jan Vertonghen in penning an improved deal to extend his stay at the Lane.
Talks are still ongoing with the 27-year-old, who since his roughly £11 million move to Tottenham from Atlético Madrid in 2015 has established h🤪imself as one of the club’s and indeed the Premier League’s finest defenders. He initially impressed in the Premier League in a loan spell with Southampton, and since his move to North Londonꦆ he has gone from strength-to-strength and forged a strong partnership with fellow Belgian Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence.
He was particularly pivotal in last season’s title battl🅘e, where Spurs eventually lost out to Leicester and would finish third, but he did help the club accomplish its initial goal of reaching the Champions League, and establish the joint-best defensive record in the league in 2015/16 alongside Manchester United.
Alderweireld has recently been on the sideline💜s with injurꩲy after suffering nerve damage in his knee, and in his absence Spurs have managed only two wins in 11 and have been eliminated from the Champions League.
report also claims to understand that talks over a new deal had begun long befo﷽re controversial football whistleblowers Football Leaks had claimed to have divulged details of Alderweireld’s contract on Monday night, supposedly revealing that the Belgian has a £25.4million release clause in his current deal.
The Mirror broke this news also late on Monday night in another report, which would make the Belgian a bargain compared to some of the defensive signings made over the summer, but this report, and another published by the , both claim that the 🌃club have spoken out against the claims made by Football ๊Leaks and since denied that any Spurs players have release clauses in their contracts.
The stipulation in his current contract at White Hart Lane would mean that the centre-half could leave the club were any potential buyer to meet the fixed f✤ee required in his contract, but Tottenham are adamant that no such clause exists in the contract of Alderweireld nor any other Spurs player.
Indeed, the part of the contract containing said release clause is not known t💝o have been published by the controversial website according to t𒊎he Evening Standard’s report.
The report also includes ꦫsome d🐼etails of what the documents in the leak contain. The revealing files estimate Alderweireld’s annual salary at 3.1million euros, equating to roughly £50,000 per week according to current exchange rates. If true, that would mean he earns less in his current deal than other vital first-team players such as Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela, which could explain part of the club’s eagerness to tie him down on an improved deal.
There are also thought to be details of a £260,000 bonus if Spurs qualify for the Champions League and Alderweireld plays at least 30 games in the relevant season, plus £470,000 in image rights. The report also claims that Football Leaks have stated🐼 that Alderweireld collects a 5,000 bonus for every first-team appearance.
If that wasn’t enough drama on a Tuesday morning, the whistleblowers’ antics didn’t stop there either. A report in the has picked up on some news coming 🔯out of Belgium over another player’s contract supposedly included in the leak, that of Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Quoting the report from French-Belgian outlet Le Soir, the Mirror suggests that Franജce international Lloris allegedly receives €4,000 every time Spurs lose a ma🦹tch.
The Le Soir report claims that the 29-year-old earns a win bonus of €8,000 when his side take꧟ all three points in a match,🔥 but he still receives half that amount when they are beaten.
The Mirror quotes the report from Belgium as saying, in translation: “In the case of a defeat, he earns a bonus of €4,000. As in many contracts, bonuses are intended for the French national team goalkeeper with his London club Tottenham.
“With each victory, Hugo Lloris earns more than €8,000. But if Tottenham lose, he still earns a bonus: around €4,000. What a way to soften the blow.”
If there is any substance to the leaks, then Lloris will have been collecting his win bonus more often than not this season, since Tottenham have only lost once in the Premier League so far in the campaign. That defeat, which 🍸came two weekends ago at Chelsea, ended their unbeaten start to 2016/17, but Spurs responded in style with a 5-0 win over struggling Swansea to🌞 start December in perfect fashion. That latest win keeps Spurs within three points of the top four and seven adrift of leaders Chelsea.
For now however, attentions turn to Eur🔥ope, where Tottenham will look to end their miserable Champions League campaign on a high against CSKA Moscow and secure the consolation p🍒rize of safe passage into the Europa League.
